ANALYSING METONYMIC TRANSLATION AS PART OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS

Lexico-grammatical modifications include transformations based on the principle of metonymic shift. Metonymy is understood as a nomination based on the adjacency of concepts. Thus, in Ilf and Petrov’s novel "The Golden Calf", a group of people who adhered to outdated political views are referred to through an out-of-fashion type of clothing, "picket vests". Metonymic translation is based on a similar mechanism - the original semantic categories in the translating text are transmitted by other categories associated with the first logical adjacency relation. The article explores various types of metonymy in the context, and analyzes their functions in translating texts from English into Uzbek.
